TALKS

By the Pricking of My Thumbs:
The Uncanny in English Renaissance Culture

This talk explores the shadow worlds which fascinated artists and writers and the voracious appetite for wonder and horror in popular print and theatre.

We will discuss the fascination with the faerie realm in Elizabeth’s reign, the obsession with witches under James I, ghosts revealing crimes, the lingering spirits of the pagan countryside, giants, creatures and monsters of myth and imagination.

Through plays, poems and picture we will investigate the paradox of the Renaissance mind: one looking forward through scientific understanding and backwards to superstition and the pre-Reformation nostalgic for magic.

The lecture will run for approx. one hour, followed by tea, cake and a chance for discussion.

Date Thursday 21st May
Tutor Sophie Woodhouse
Time 2.00pm – 4.00pm

The Heroes and Villains of Colour – Pigments from Earth to Alchemy

An illustrated talk inviting you to enter the world of colour in art and culture.

Taking you on a journey through history and the colour spectrum, you will encounter a palette of animal, vegetable and mineral pigments, exploring the stories of the benign and the deadly.

You will hear the dark stories of bright pigments, understand the symbolism and language of colour and view some of these pigments in their natural form.

After a tea break we will return for questions and sharing our ideas.
