Three Day Gilded Wood Conservation and Restoration Workshop

Join us for a three day deep-dive workshop learning how to conserve and repair carved, gilded wood using traditional methods.

You will investigate objects to understand the difference between oil and water gilding, how to clean gold and when gesso needs consolidation. You will make and learn how to apply size, gesso and bole, then both oil and water gilding. Finally you will master distressing, toning, glazing and watercolour so your repairs blend in.

These skills will enable you to repair old frames, furniture and other gilded wood objects as well as creating your own gilding projects. Please bring any gilded objects such as old picture frames to learn on.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some conservation experience.

Light lunches, refreshments and all materials are included in the workshop fee, however please bring along your own gilded objects to work on.

Introduction to Nalbinding
COURSE FULL

Loop-manipulated textiles that use just a single needle can be traced as far back as the Mesolithic period and are still popular today, particularly in Scandinavia. Join us for a fascinating hands-on journey through the history and ancient roots of nalbinding, a technique that predates knitting by thousands of years, and has been used to make everything from socks, to bags, mittens and more.

Working step-by-step, you’ll learn five distinctive stitches to give you a comprehensive grounding in this remarkably versatile craft:

  • Simple looping.
  • looping around a core (Tybrind Vig stitch).
  • Coptic stitch (cross-knit looping).
  • York (Coppergate) stitch.
  • Oslo stitch.

Go home with a new understanding and appreciation of this ancient technique, and a range of sample pieces.

No prior experience is required — just enthusiasm and curiosity for ancient textiles and traditional making!

All materials, a light lunch and refreshments are included in the workshop fee.

Introduction to Flax Day

Spend a fascinating day with flax experts Simon and Ann Cooper learning about this most useful and ancient plant. The morning will involve a presentation on the history of flax, and then in the afternoon you will have the opportunity to process and make your own flax thread. Go home inspired and informed.

Morning:

  • Introduction, presentation on flax and hemp ancient and modern with examples of fabric for everyone to see.
  • How to grow flax from seed, harvesting and retting flax straw with more hands-on examples.
  • Working flax straw on a bench to extract fibres, twisting to make a balanced thread.

After lunch:

  • Working prepared fibres ready for spinning, dressing a distaff, use of drop spindle.
  • Spinning tow with a twine twister.
  • Basic weaving on prepared warp using threads made through the day.

This workshop is suitable for anyone with an interest in flax, either growing, spinning or weaving. No previous experience is required.

Introduction to Sprang

Join us for a fascinating introduction to Sprang, one of the world’s oldest textile techniques.

Sprang is a remarkable method of interlinking and braiding on stretched threads, with examples dating back to the Neolithic period. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn the basics using a simple stick frame to create beautifully elastic fabrics ideal for bags, caps, and more.

Most participants go home with a small finished bag, a collection of sample pieces, and a work-in-progress to continue at home - along with a new appreciation for the ingenuity of this timeless textile craft and its early makers.

This workshop is suitable for all skill levels, from complete beginners onwards.

Egg Tempera Painting

This workshop introduces participants to the traditional craft of preparing and using egg-based emulsions in fine art. Egg tempera has been used by artists for thousands of years, and it brings a unique luminous quality to the artwork, as well as being a sustainable and durable paint medium that is particularly suited to fine work.

During the day you will learn how to prepare a variety of emulsions, combined with pigments to produce your own paints, and then paint your own small Renaissance-style icon.

By the end of the course, you will have acquired a solid foundation in working with egg tempera and natural pigments, gaining both practical skills and essential knowledge of this historic medium.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as more experienced artists looking to explore this fantastic medium.
