Rag Rugs - Plaiting and Progging

Braided rugs were and are very popular in Canada & USA. During the workshop your tutor will demonstrate the traditional technique of plaiting/braiding fabric strips and stitching them into a
spiral to make a circular table mat which could grow into a rug.

Jenni will also demonstrate progging short strips of fabric through hessian backing to make rugs, wall hangings or seat mats. You may make a sampler or start a progged project to finish at home which only requires a simple tool and can be worked on knee or table, giving a shaggy, cut pile.

A seat mat is a small first project to prog reasonably quickly and works well using
cotton fabrics. Feel free to focus on one technique, so I suggest just Plaiting or Progging and you can see how the other technique is done. You don’t need to have a design in mind, just a desire to make something.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners or those looking to practice these traditional techniques.

A light lunch, refreshments and some materials are included, but please bring along your own recycled fabrics - eg t-shirts, curtains etc - to use.

Silk Scarf - Acid Dyeing and Discharge Printing

Create a dramatic long dark blue silk scarf scattered with white stencilled images.

First, you will design and make your own stencil to use on your scarf, and learn the basics of pattern design to create your layout. Then, after using a simple acid dye, made to be removed (discharged) in selected areas, you will stencil your design across the scarf, which will produce a pattern of white motifs against a rich midnight-blue background. The big moment when your design is finally revealed is so exciting that you will want to do it all over again!

By the end of the day you will have completed a unique decorated silk scarf (approx. 180cm long) to take home.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with textile dyeing experience.

All materials, a light lunch and refreshments are included in the workshop fee.

Monoprint and Watercolour

Create vibrant and exciting images based on a still life subject using a combination of monoprinting and watercolour in this one day workshop.

By separating the line (monoprinting) and colour (watercolour) elements of the work, each becomes freer and more lively, often producing unexpectedly satisfying results.

Demonstrations and help from the tutor mean everyone can succeed with this technique, and it can be especially rewarding for beginners, and those who want to try a different approach from conventional painting. No matter what your skill level, you will be delighted by your finished
art works.

Suitable for complete beginners and more experienced artists and printmakers.

All materials, a light lunch and refreshments are included in the workshop fee.
