Mark Making for Sketching
Spend a day getting to know how to use different art materials in this workshop that is all about experimentation and technique.
You will start by making a simple concertina book that you will then use to record your mark making so that afterwards you will have a reference book for future use when drawing and sketching.
Using a wide variety of media such as pencil, charcoal, graphite sticks, pastels, water soluble crayons, oil pastels etc. we will use these media in simple step by step exercises. These exercises will help you learn more about your materials and the kind of marks that you are able to make with them.
This workshop is experimental in nature so that you can have fun learning basic techniques that you can use in your own artwork in the future, using your concertina book as a reminder of what is possible.
This workshop is suitable for anyone looking to learn more about how to get the best from their art materials, from beginners to experienced artists.
A light lunch, refreshments and all materials are included in the workshop fee.

Chinese Brush Painting – Chinoiserie
Chinoiserie started its life in the late 17th century. The English and Dutch traders were flooding the market with porcelain, silks, patterned fabrics and laquered furniture and artists were inspired by the exotic merchandise to create new designs.
The main characteristics of chinoiserie include depictions of distant mystical lands, fabulous birds and figures and intricate repeated patterns. The later 18th century saw its influence on exuberant Rococo style.
On today's workshop we will take a look at these archival designs. The aim is to create your own unique long chinoiserie banner/scroll using gold ink and vibrant colours. The size is roughly 65cms x 21cms when complete.
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with previous art experience.
A light lunch, refreshments and most materials are included in the workshop fee, you will just need to bring your own gold ink.

Travel Sketchbooks
Join wildlife and travel artist Shelly as she shows you how to capture landscape and wildlife subjects inspired by worldwide destinations. Your tutor will use her own travel sketchbooks and reference images to help you understand the approaches to capturing sketchbook records of your own travels and how to develop a lively and fluid visual travel journal.
Through the use of pencil, pen and vibrantly coloured washes she will unpick some of the compositional techniques she uses when working en plein air.
You can bring your own images with you to work from on the day if you want to, but there will be lots of inspiration in the room to use.
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as more experienced artists looking for new tips and techniques.
Please bring your own art materials, as these are the ones you will use when on your own adventures. A light lunch and refreshments are included in the workshop fee.

During the day you will learn how to prepare a variety of emulsions, combined with pigments to produce your own paints, and then paint your own small Renaissance-style icon.
By the end of the course, you will have acquired a solid foundation in working with egg tempera and natural pigments, gaining both practical skills and essential knowledge of this historic medium.
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as more experienced artists looking to explore this fantastic medium.
A light lunch, refreshments and all materials are included in the workshop fee.

Mixed Media Botanicals and Birds
Discover the joy of playful experimentation in this hands-on workshop. You’ll create your own Spring-inspired mixed media image using intuitive painting techniques such as inks and bleach, watercolours, and wax resist.
Once your painting begins to take shape, you’ll explore free machine embroidery — using stitch as a mark-making tool to enhance and transform your artwork.
There will be plenty of options for those who wish to take the theme further: adding birds or butterflies, experimenting with carbon paper for drawing, or incorporating stencils. Mixed media is wonderfully creative — there are no rules, just curiosity and a willingness to have a go.
No prior experience is necessary. Your tutor will guide you through the process and respond to individual ideas and needs.

Making Earth Pigments
Learn how to grind, sieve and muller raw ochre pigment to make watercolour paints and etching inks for printmaking in this one-day workshop.
Ochre is a naturally occurring pigment found in earth rich in ferric oxide. The Forest of Dean is one of these places and artist / printmaker Nichola Goff has been collecting and using these pigments in her work. Earth pigments produce beautifully rich tones ranging through yellow, orange, red, purple and umber, they are relatively simple to process and often used for paints and dyes.
In this workshop you will learn about processing earth pigments from a raw material into a fine powdered pigment that can then be used for inks and paints. You will learn the techniques and recipes to produce water colour paints and etching ink, and learn monoprint techniques to experiment with the earth pigments as printing inks. You will take home a small set of earth colour watercolour paints, a tube of unique earth pigment etching ink made on the day and a set of hand-made monoprints.
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as more experienced printmakers.
A light lunch, refreshments and all materials are included in the workshop fee.
