and it has been designed to inspire you to take as a next step after an
initial Taster Day or intro workshop. You will have an opportunity to
practise several techniques, including kiln carving, colour dilution and
metal inclusion, and will go home with a variety of unique glass pieces
of your own.
This weekend is ideal if you are thinking of taking glass fusion up as a
hobby / interest and want to try out some different techniques with a
bit of guidance first. It also gives you time to plan and create more
complex projects than a day workshop allows, or it might provide a way
of exploring if you want to undertake the City and Guilds Level 2 Glass
Course. No matter what, it will be a fun immersion into the world of
fused glass.
Previous experience of glass cutting / glass fusion would be useful but
not essential.
Saturday 8th November:
Morning:-
> Overview of outcomes for the two days.
> Introduction to glass fusing, including materials available.
> How to score and break glass safely.
> Planning / designing your kiln carving projects.

Get to Know your Sewing Machine
This supportive beginner workshop is for those who need step-by-step
guidance setting up and using your own sewing machine.
You will start by learning the basics of threading up, winding a bobbin,
adjusting the tension and how to replace needles and feet. You will also
learn how to use the various stitches and how to remedy problems with
your stitching.
By the end of the workshop you will feel more confident about using your
machine and come away with notes and samples that will help you to
continue your sewing at home.
This workshop is suitable for those who have traditional or basic
digital sewing machines and you will need to send the Make and Model
number of your machine to the tutor prior to booking so that she can
confirm that she is able to work with their particular machine. This is
due to the complexities in operating, and the time that can be involved
in setting up some machines ready for use. Tutor’s contact details are
available from the college.
For those students who have much more complex digital sewing machines,
this workshop is probably not suitable.
All materials, a light lunch and refreshments are included in the
workshop fee, but please bring your own sewing machine.

From Pigments to Page: Medieval Paints and Illuminations
A day to delve into the world of making medieval artwork. Using historic
pigments, you will make your own paints using traditional ingredients to
recreate the medieval palette of colours in shells.
Then the tutor will introduce you to the wonderful, weird world of
manuscript marginalia, the illustrations around text. Some decorations
are foliate, floral or geometric and some feature bizarre beasts, killer
rabbits, sinister snails and strange hybrid characters.
With your new paints, you will paint a manuscript-style image, perhaps
an animal from a bestiary, musicians, aspects of medieval life or
something from your imagination. For those not used to drawing, it could
be a simple decorated capital letter. The tutor will guide you through
all the processes of drawing and painting and provide many visual
images.
You will go home with a new understanding of the whole process, from
making the paints to using them, as well as a medieval image of your
own.
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as experienced
artists looking to try something a bit different.

the big blank page.
We will do warm up sketches & experiment with drawing in ink, graphite and
coloured pencil to create a natural history illustration zine. We will
learn about the golden spiral and Fibonacci's sequence (briefly) and
look at pattern, texture, and colour-matching in watercolour. We can
finish off our piece using lettering or alphabet stamps to add text on
our zine if desired.
This workshop includes traditional skills such as drawing and painting
