Lino Block Printing onto Fabric

Come and spend a day using lino blocks and textile inks to print your own unique design onto fabric. Start by transferring your design onto lino. Learn how to cut into the lino to produce your block and then how to print your design onto fabric using textile ink. You will cover the basics of pattern design and, at the end of the day, take home your hand printed fabric.
 
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with lino printing experience who just want to play.
 
A light lunch, refreshments and all materials are included in the workshop fee.

Watercolour Textures

Thought watercolour was a flat, transparent medium? Think again! This workshop will encourage you explore the world of weird materials that can bring paintings to life.

You will experiment with collage, fabric, bubble wrap, texture paste and found objects to give your watercolours an abstract and contemporary quality and go home with a host of new ideas for your art work.
 
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as experienced artists. 
 
A light lunch, refreshments and some materials are included, however please bring your usual watercolour painting materials, including paint, brushes and paper.

Small Rush Baskets

Make a small box out of rush on a former (shaped mould). Rush is a wonderfully soft, flexible and beautiful plant material to weave; so flexible that many items are made around a mould or former.

Use simple everyday containers to make your mould and weave a small handy container that  is unique to you. Your finished box will not only be pretty but it will also be useful for holding napkins, stationery, bathroom items or other bits and bobs around your house. 
 
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with rush weaving experience.

Soils, Composting and Mulching

Good soil is essential for a healthy garden. Spend a day with us learning more about:
 
> Different soil types, identifying your own soil type and how to care for it.
> Improving soils: manures, composts, mulches.
> Mulch: what to use, how to use it and when to apply it.
> Composting: the basics of making your own.
> The no-dig gardening method: a brief look at what it is, how to do it, and its advantages.
 
You will leave with practical general knowledge as well as information about how to manage and improve your own soil at home.

Illustrative Map-Making

Create a unique illustrated map of your chosen location in this one day workshop.

We will briefly look at other cartography and the parts of a map, share ideas and then make a rough sketch of the location. You will include historical and personal details and perhaps folklore which will help instill a sense of place, and record your ideas and feelings.

You will improve your drawing and learn about cartographic icons, and discover the Turkish map fold!

Finally you will assemble your map as a final image which you can also choose to get scanned and printed at a later date.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with drawing experience.

All materials, a light lunch and refreshments are included in the workshop fee. You will just need to bring along an idea of the area you want to map and any reference materials to refer to.

Expressive Mixed Media Landscapes

Spend a day playing around in this mixed media workshop. First, you will paint your landscape onto paper using acrylics, and once you have your design ready, you will rip it up and place it onto canvas.

The afternoon will be spent stitching and embellishing your design with thread and beads. You can take your design in any direction you choose, let your ideas and stitches flow!

This workshop is suitable for most skill levels, from beginner upwards, as long as you are able to operate a sewing machine.

Most materials are provided, however please bring along your own sewing machine, and any threads and beads you would like to play with. A light lunch and refreshments are included.

Enamel Bowls

Create a beautiful small (9cm) bowl using a variety of coloured, wet process enamels.
Start by either dipping or brushing your first layer of enamel onto the bowl. You will then be shown how to add your own designs by using the brush, sgraffito or stencilling techniques. 
Learn how to fire your work in the kiln and take home a lovely, unique enamelled bowl.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those who want to improve their enamelling skills.

Introduction to Stained Glass

Join us for one of our most popular workshops, an introduction to the skills behind the craft of church windows. 

Have a fast but fun filled day creating your own stained glass panel. Enjoy choosing your design from a selection of pre prepared templates.

Your tutor will guide you through the processes of choosing your design and also on coloured glass choices.  

You will be shown how to safely cut your glass to shape and how to work with lead cames, solder and leaded light cement to create your own wonderful small panel to take home.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those who have attended this day before but would like to practice their skills or try a different design.

Introduction to Relief Wood Carving

Spend a day learning the basic skills used in relief woodcarving, including laying out of the design, setting-in, carving technique, tool selection and sharpening.

This takes place in a relaxed and positive, can-do atmosphere with close supervision and plenty of demonstration. Participants will be guided through a simple project of their own design with a view to complete in one day.

By the end of the day you will take home a complete, or near-complete carving of your own, as well as an understanding of the tools and techniques needed to continue your own woodcarving in the future.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some woodcarving experience.

Fused Glass Illuminated Christmas Trees

Repeated due to popular demand!

This fun and inspirational half day workshop allows you to design and create your own sparkling free-standing glass trees, complete with lights and wooden stand. There will be lots of examples will be available for your inspiration but do bring ideas and pictures with you if you want to.

During the afternoon you will be taught how to safely cut and handle glass, compose your tree and how to assemble your pieces. Your glass will be fired and be posted back to you within 2 weeks. Your two trees will be so pretty that you may consider keeping them on display all year
round!

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with fused glass experience.

All materials to make two Christmas trees are included in the workshop fee. An additional £6 fee will be payable to the tutor on the day for postage.
