Our City and Guilds students will be exhibiting at the completion of their course. Something not to be missed. Tea, coffee and light refreshments available.
23 and 24 August 2008 Nature as a source for making things Tutors: several of the Westhope staff Fees: £120 per person (maximum 2 children with one adult) A weekend for a single parent or grandparent and child (or children) enabling them to bond and enjoy activities together using the materials collected outside as inspiration for making things. The possibilities are endless with clay, paper and felt, together with weaving and printing. Games and walks are included in this weekend, as well as outdoor eating.
13 and 14 September 2008 Felt Inspirations Tutor: Fiona Wright Fees: £180 resident arriving on Friday after 4.30pm: £100 non-resident Saturday and Sunday tuition and all refreshments Fiona is a well known Australian tutor who returns to Westhope following her previously very successful courses. Fiona says “This workshop, inspired by images and memories of a place we love, is intended to explore techniques of nuno felt and develop design skills – translating memories and feelings about a special place into art works. We will cover the techniques of nuno felting, explore ways we might depict our special places and look at using stitch – machine or hand – to add details and texture to these pieces.” This workshop is bound to be oversubscribed, so please book early.
20 and 21 September 2008 Creative projects for computerised Machine Embroidery Tutor: Ruth Cox Fees: £180 resident arriving on Friday after 4.30pm: £100 non-resident Saturday and Sunday tuition and all refreshments Have fun with your embroidery machine and creative a variety of exciting pieces that can be stitched together to make a ‘sampler’ bag or cushion. We will explore numerous techniques that are ideal for embellishing fashion garments, accessories and home décor. Please bring along your embroidery machine and accessories.

Sessions on observation, tone and colour technique to give your work real richness.

This Masterclass offers a dual focus of creative embroidery and design tuition. Explore an exciting range of techniques, with the options to create a unique portfolio of samples, or develop work towards fashion and interior items. Sue will share ideas and display samples and designs from her new book.
18 and 19 October 2008 Collograph Printing Tutor: Jo Jukes Fees: £170 resident arriving on Friday after 4.30pm: £95 non-resident Saturday and Sunday tuition and all refreshments Jo will show you how to prepare, make and print relief, collograph and intaglio etchings using a selection of texture bases, paints and inks. These can be printed onto paper or fabric
25 October 2008 – Saturday Workshop Ply Split Braiding – An introduction to the technique and further explorations Tutor: Julie Hedges Fee: £50 The first of two days (the second on 15 November 2008). Ply splitting has traditionally been used to make camel girths and animal regalia in Rajasthan and Gujarat, India. Work with Julie Hedges in this versatile technique using highly twisted colourful cords in cotton and linen to make exciting shaped braids which may be used for textile accessories, jewellery and three dimensional pieces. For beginners and those with some experience of Ply-Splitting.
25 and 26 October 2008 Stitched Boxes Tutor: Margaret McQuillen Fees: £180 resident arriving on Friday after 4.30pm: £100 non-resident Saturday and Sunday tuition and all refreshments A weekend making a box of your own choice with drawers, hinges, etc. (if you wish) from card covered in fabric. The lid can incorporate a previously worked piece of embroidery or miniature patchwork or just a lovely piece of fabric.

1 and 2 November 2008 Dress Pattern Making Tutor: Pat Phillpott Fees: £180 resident arriving on Friday after 4.30pm: £100 non-resident Saturday and Sunday tuition and all refreshments To accommodate those with difficult proportions. Make paper patterns for simple garment shapes from a body block in fabric. Students will be able to continue at home.
8 and 9 November 2008 Ice a cake for Christmas Tutor: Majorie Vickers Fees: £150 resident arriving on Friday after 4.30pm: £75 non-resident Saturday and Sunday tuition and all refreshments Ice a cake for Christmas – and more! The weekend will include covering the bake, writing/lettering piping skills, sugar crafted winter flowers and shell edgings. Gain some confidence and enjoy yourself.

15 and 16 November 2008 Glass Jewellery Tutor: Jo Jukes Fees: £180 resident arriving on Friday after 4.30pm: £100 non-resident Saturday and Sunday tuition and all refreshments We have chosen a day of each so that you can go home with some enyable pieces, skiln fired within the weekend. This course covers kiln based experiences of warm glass using recycled or dichroic glass and powdered enamelling onto copper include scraffito and inlaying. If you produce a lot of glass pieces you will have to come back to pick them up or pay for postage and packing. Materials cost will be in the region of £10 to £13.
22 and 23 November 2008 Sashiko Quilting Tutor: Margaret McQuillen Fees: £180 resident arriving on Friday after 4.30pm: £100 non-resident Saturday and Sunday tuition and all refreshments Make a small quilt, wall hanging or similar item using the Japanese Sashiko quilting technique. This can either be worked traditionally by hand or using a more modern approach by machine.

6 and 7 December 2008 Christmas Craft Weekend Tutor: Pat Phillpott RESIDENTS ONLY – ARRIVAL SATURDAY MORNING ONLY Fees: £110 resident arriving on Saturday morning 9.30am. This weekend was a huge success last year and we are repeating it with Pat Phillpott. Residents will be encouraged to dress up for a dinner party on Saturday evening. Early booking is advisable as this weekend is bound to be oversubscribed!
13 and 14 December 2008 A ‘Not Christmas’ Weekend. RESIDENTS ONLY – ARRIVAL SATURDAY MORNING ONLY Fees: £110 resident arriving on Saturday morning 9.30am. Massage £25 (only available if booked in advance) Ladies treat yourself to a bit of relaxation before Christmas – walks in the fresh country air, craft work round the log first, soak in an aromatic bath and even have the option of a massage (which must be booked in advance for an additional fee). Dress for dinner on Saturday evening and finish your weekend with a light Sunday lunch.
