2008 Summer Schools
Enjoy days of learning and creativity during July, August and September in the tranquil and inspirational atmosphere of the College. Our Summer Schools are a chance to enjoy and get deep into your craft to gain real knowledge and skill. Summer Schools are midweek and residents and non-residents are welcome to attend.
Residents
Arrival time: Tuesday 4.30pm onwards
6.30pm Introductory talk and sherry
7.00pm Evening meal
Fees include all tuition and full board.
Non-residents
Please note some courses have a Tuesday evening session.
Fees include tuition, coffee, lunch and tea
Evening meal for non-residents - £15.00 Please book in advance.
Course times: 10.00am 5.00pm (variable) earlier finish Friday
Evenings can be spent in the garden, walking in the area, using our extensive library or working in the classrooms.
Westhope has facilities in place to teach and accommodate studentsawith disabilities.

MAKING WATERCOLOURS DO THE WORK
Cost: £280 resident, £160 non-resident

Tutor: Clare Linford
Clare is our design and textile tutor who has great flare in watercolour painting. Her patience and inspiration as a teacher are already known
Learn how to work with watercolour paints to make the most of their ability to create vivid colours and subtle washes. Find the balance between control of the medium and letting the paint work for you.

MIXED METAL JEWELLERY: PEWTER CASTING, ENAMELLING AND SILVER CLAY

Tutor: Jo Jukes
Jo is our very experienced jewellery tutor. Her knowledge and enthusiasm will inspire you. Forget about home and spend three days making things! The techniques covered are Pewter Casting, Enamelling and Silver Clay. The aim is to go home with several finished pieces. There will be an additional charge for materials provided.

VENETIAN STYLE MASKS AND WRAPS
Course times: 10.00am 5.00pm Wednesday and Thursday; 9.30am 12.30pm Friday

Arthur has a BA and MA in fashion and textiles. He is a well known tutor in machine embroidery, millinery and other textiles.
Sumptuous Venetian style masks and wraps rich in machine embroidery, together with the use of the new Embellisher machines provided will enable students to produce a piece where your imagination has run wild.

WOODCARVING

Michael is a renowned woodcarver and inspiring tutor who will enable you to achieve your unknown potential.

THE CREATIVE EDGE - NEW APPROACHES FOR PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Sandra is a well known author, artist and teacher. This course will provide a master class approach for all students of textile art at any level using intuitive thoughts and ideas as well as practical design theory. Students will explore ways of working with their own themes in a number of adventurous ways.

Marietta has been associated with Westhope for many years and you will definitely enjoy yourself finding out more about making and using felt. If you like the natural wool colouring, or want to use bright colours you have the choice and a chance to learn or develop further your knowledge into 3D objects/accessories.

FASHION FOR THE FULLER FIGURE

Tutor: Pat Phillpott
Pat Phillpott is our Principal and also the fashion tutor at Westhope. She has wide experience in making clothes and fitting figures.
Ideas for ladies who dressmake. The course will enable them to look better and feel better about their clothes. Participants will go home with a personalised body block from which simple patterns can be made. Alterations and style ideas will be discussed.

Clare and Pat make a good team. Clare is the Westhope Textile Decoration Tutor whilst Pat is the fashion tutor.
Create a very simple but stunning top by decorating your own fabric. Transfer marks, colours and patterns onto fabric to make a unique design, then make it up into one of several elegant tops. No dressmaking skills needed.
10, 11 and 12 September 2008 commencing 9 September at 8.00pm
SILKEN VESSELS
Course times: 10.00am 5.00pm Wednesday and Thursday; 9.30am 12.30pm Friday

Tutor: Stevie Walker
Stevie is one of the Colleges highly valued City and Guilds Tutors.
Combine all current enthusiasms in these three days, using silk fibres, machine embroidery and embellishing to achieve a 3D object, or several for that matter. All levels of experience are welcome.
