SUMINAGASHI

Course full

The earliest form of marbling originating in Japan over 800yrs ago. Sumi (ink) and nagashi (floating) describe the process of applying ink to the surface of water then taking a print on paper. The process is elegant and simple requiring some patience and mindfulness! You will look at which paper, brushes, ink and surfactant are suitable and create papers that can be used for book covers, cards, origami and many other uses.

MODERN CALLIGRAPHY

This hand is based upon the copperplate hand and is created by using pressure and release on a flexible nib, quite a different technique to the broad edged nib styles of calligraphy. You will learn how to use your pen proficiently and use this style in a decorative way to complete a short project.

JAPANESE BOOK BINDING

A Japanese bound book is quite different from its Western counterpart. Come and learn about its construction, then cut and make a blank journal or sketchbook with an inner binding, corner pieces, cover and stab stitching on the spine. Bring a piece of your own suminagashi paper or other decorative paper for the cover, or choose from a selection provided by your tutor on the day.
